3 Billion Identities Stolen, Is Yours One of Them?

By: Collin Olson

After recently entering the workforce as a new graduate, I’ve realized the importance of safeguarding my identity, especially after the recent cyberattack by the hacker "USDoD" on National Public Data, which allegedly compromised nearly 3 billion identities.

To protect myself, I took the necessary steps to freeze my credit with all three major credit reporting agencies, as each one covers different credit avenues. The process took less than 10 minutes using the links provided above.

Additionally, I enabled Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) where available for extra security. Freezing your credit is a quick and effective way to protect your personal and financial information for the long term.

Why You Should Care to Freeze Your Credit:

  • Prevent Identity Theft: A credit freeze blocks potential creditors from accessing your credit report, making it difficult for identity thieves to open new accounts in your name.

  • Protect Sensitive Data After a Breach: In the wake of data breaches, freezing your credit can prevent criminals from using the stolen information to commit fraud.

Doing so will help ensure your financial goals are protected and secure.

Citizens can place, temporarily lift, or permanently remove a credit freeze on their credit reports with the three major credit reporting agencies—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion— at no cost.
